Overview

Royal Road is one of the most popular web fiction platforms, and many authors choose to cross-post or migrate their stories to Fictionry for its modern features and monetization options. The good news: if you have Author Premium on Royal Road, you can export your story as an EPUB file, which makes migration straightforward.

Exporting from Royal Road

Royal Road offers EPUB export for authors with Author Premium:

  1. Log in to Royal Road and go to your Author Dashboard
  2. Navigate to the story you want to export
  3. Look for the "Download" or "Export" option in your story settings
  4. Select EPUB format and download the file

⚠️ Note: EPUB export requires Royal Road Author Premium. If you don't have it, you can use the paste tool instead — see the "Alternative: Using the Paste Tool" section below.

Importing into Fictionry

  1. Create a new story on Fictionry with your title, description, genres, and cover
  2. Go to Chapters → Import
  3. Select "EPUB" and upload the file you downloaded from Royal Road
  4. Fictionry will detect all chapters and show a preview
  5. Review the chapter titles — Royal Road EPUBs usually preserve these well
  6. Click "Import All" to create all chapters as drafts
  7. Review each chapter for formatting issues and publish when ready

Alternative: Using the Paste Tool

If you don't have Royal Road Author Premium, you can still migrate using the paste tool. It's more manual but works perfectly well:

  1. Open each chapter on Royal Road
  2. Select all the chapter content (Ctrl+A in the reading area)
  3. Copy it (Ctrl+C)
  4. In Fictionry, go to Chapters → Import → Paste
  5. Paste the content and import
  6. Repeat for each chapter

For stories with many chapters, consider doing this in batches over a few sessions. The paste tool preserves basic formatting like bold, italic, and paragraphs.

Tips for a Smooth Migration

🎉 Tip: Consider cross-posting rather than fully migrating. Many authors publish on both Royal Road and Fictionry to reach the widest audience.

After importing, take time to:

  • Review formatting on a few chapters to catch any issues
  • Re-upload your cover image at high resolution
  • Update your story description — you may want to tailor it for the Fictionry audience
  • Announce the migration to your Royal Road readers so they know where to find you
